The U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) operates an unmanned
weather station on Canton Island, in the Kiribati islands, for the study of El
Nino. Besides taking the normal surface readings, the Canton Island
station has the ability to remotely launch weather balloons. The facility
has been powered by a Bergey 1 kW turbine and a 1 kW solar array since it was
installed in 1988. There is no back-up generator in this system.
The wind system has never been serviced. It does have some corrosion,
but has been 100% available since installation. The picture above shows
the system being installed by NCAR personnel. The success of this system
led to a larger installation at a weather station in Taiwan (see Pengchiayu
Island case study).
