Mr. Butch Thurman of Houston, Texas maintains a weekend home built on pilings in
Galveston Bay. In 1985 Mr. Thurman installed a 7.5 kW Bergey Excel wind
turbine with batteries and an inverter to provide electrical power without the
noise of a diesel generator. In addition to the normal lights and
appliances found in remote homes, Mr. Thurman's weekend home also sports air
conditioning, electric space heating, an electric hot-water heater, and an
electric clothes dryer. The wind system charges up the battery during the
week to support the high week-end consumption.
The wind turbine is mounted on a Rohn 80 ft. SSV self-supporting tower
anchored to pilings that were installed using a construction barge. The tower is
also guyed in three directions due to the limited strength of the pilings.
Mr. Thurman originally installed used "telephone company" batteries
and these had to be replaced in 1992.
