In 1990 when he built his home along the California coast north of San Luis
Obispo, Leon Jostad chose not to install utility power and instead designed and
installed a wind/solar hybrid system. He was concerned about the
ecological impact of conventional power and he had for many years been
interested in alternative energy. Due to the high costs of bringing in
utility service a number of his neighbors were using solar power when he built
his house. But, they all had to have special high efficiency appliances
because of the expense of the photovoltaic modules. Mr. Jostad decided
that a hybrid system using both wind and solar would provide more effective
year-round performance: "When its not sunny, its windy, and vice
versa"
Mr. Jostad's system consists of a 24 volt BWC 1500 (1.5 kW) and a 1 kW solar
array. "The system has run flawlessly over the last 9 years"
according to Jostad and he takes particular pride in the fact that the system
easily supports his treasured "big old Amana refrigerator, which uses lots
of power."
