Llasarya is community of ~ 1,000 people located in the Altiplano Region of
Bolivia. The altitude at Llasarya is 4,400 m (14,400 ft). Community
water was taken from a nearby stream, but it was not safe water and the village
experienced a high incidence of cholera. In February, 1995 NRECA and CARE
dug a new well and installed a Bergey 10 kW wind-electric pumping system to
deliver the water ~ 1 km to the village. To access the best wind resources
the wind turbine was place on a nearby hill ~ 700 m (2,300 ft) from the
well. The photo on the right above shows the local people carrying the 500
kg (1,100 lb) wind turbine up the hill by hand.
The system included an 18 m (60 ft) Tilt-up tower and a 26-stage Grundfos
submersible pump. The system supplied Llasarya with ~ 35 m3 of clean, safe
water per day, which eliminated the cholera problem. The system has since
been removed because the electric grid has been brought in to Llasarya.
The system will be redeployed to another village without utility power.
