Bergey Windpower Case Study

Pleasanton, California (SE of San Francisco)

 Rural Residential System

Ms. Marge Pearson installed a 10 kW Bergey Excel-S in 1985 to reduce her utility bills from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). The Pearson's live in Pleasanton, California within a few miles of the Altamont Pass windfarm area, so they enjoy a good wind resource. The wind turbine was installed while the house was being built so her general contractor and electrical contractor did all the work.  One challenge was digging the trench for the wire run up the hill behind the house.  Another challenge was erecting the tower up on the hill.  To keep from having to take a crane up the hill the Pearson's chose a BWC 80 ft. Tilt-up tower.  By putting the turbine up on the hill the Pearson's are tapping the best wind resource on their property.  Since installation the system has worked well with only a few minor electrical problems.  The Pearson's estimate that the wind system saves approximately $175 per month on their utility bill.  Since the system was installed when state and federal tax credits were still available, the Pearson wind system has already paid off its initial costs completely.
