Afghanistan's First Windfarm uses Bergey Turbines

 November 13, 2008

On November 13th the First Vice President of Afghanistan, Ahmad Zia Massoud, and U.S. Army Brig. General James McConville inaugurated Afghanistan's first wind farm, which is composed of ten Bergey Excel-R wind turbines on 30m (100 ft) guyed towers.  The wind farm powers a portion of the city of Panjshir in mountainous region of Northern Afghanistan.

The wind turbines charge batteries and then an array of inverters is used to supply 380/220 VAC, 50 Hz electricity for schools, clinics, governmental offices, businesses, and homes through a newly built distribution grid.  The Panjshir wind farm was funded by the U.S. Army through the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team.  The project was constructed by Sustainable Energy Services Afghanistan, Bergey Windpower's dealer in Kabul.  For a brochure on SESA, click here.

Before constructing the wind farm the site had to be cleared of land mines.  Just before construction began the land available was cut in half due to another project, forcing the turbine towers to be placed close together.  Construction began in 2007 but work was halted for months due to the heavy snows last winter.  With no crane available the towers and turbines were stacked piece by piece using a gin-pole and winch system.  SESA personnel were trained in the procedure at Bergey Windpower's Aerial Tower Work class.
