Bergey Turbines Chosen for High Visibility US-DOE Projects

 June 30, 1999

On June 30, 1999 the U.S. Dept. of Energy announced five projects to be funded under the "Field Verification Program for Small Wind Turbines".  This program was designed to test the performance and reliability of small wind turbines installed at a variety of customer sites.  Under the Field Verification Program a single turbine of each model included in the project is also installed at the National Wind Technology Center near Boulder, Colorado.

Three of the five winning projects featured Bergey 10 kW wind turbines.  A total of thirteen BWC Excel's will be installed in these projects:

New York / New Jersey:  AWS Scientific:  NY/NJ Distributed Wind Power Field Verification Project (4 x 10 kW)

Montana:  Siyeh Development Corp. / Blackfeet Indian Tribe:  Supplemental Power for Town of Browning Wastewater Treatment Facility (4 x 10 kW)

Rhode Island:  Offshore Services:  Block Island, Phase II Project (5 x 10 kW)

The first systems under the project were installed in October at the National Wind Technology Center and at the Browning, Montana wastewater facility.  The picture on the left shows the four Bergey 10 kW turbines installed on 100 ft (30 m) self-supporting lattice towers at the Browning, MT site. "We chose the Bergey turbines because the wind up here is pretty fierce and we needed a turbine we could count on" says Marty Wilde of Siyeh Development Corp.  In fact two-thirds of the installations under the DOE FVP project will utilize Bergey wind turbines.
