Bergey XL.1 Powers LG Skycharger Station at World's Largest Consumer Electronics Show

January 9, 2009

The LG Skycharger (www.skycharger.com), unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is the first  mobile phone charging station in the U.S. powered solely by wind and solar renewable energy.  The CES is the largest consumer electronics show in the world.  This years CES (Jan. 8 - 11) drew 2,700 exhibitors and 130,000 attendees from 140 countries.

The LG Skycharger can charge up to 104 phones at one time using its Bergey 1 kW wind turbine and 0.88 kW of solar.  Although Las Vegas has a moderate wind resource and the "tower" height is short, the Bergey turbine performed well during the show.  One attendee who charged his phone noted in a comment to an article in electronichouse.com that "I was at CES today (Jan. 9) and it was producing 300 watts from the wind and 200 watts from the solar"

The LG Skycharger was supplied by the U.K. firm Gotwind (gotwind.org).  Gotwind's first charging station, built for for the U.K. mobile phone company Orange, used a Chinese turbine copied from the Bergey XL.1.  "To be honest, it wasn't very good" says Ben Jandrell, technical director of Gotwind.  Gotwind switched to the Bergey XL.1 for its second generation Recharge Pod MK2, which LG used for the Consumer Electronics Show.  "The XL.1 looks great and is working very well, especially in light winds".

LG and Gotwind expect to see Skychargers at numerous events and festivals around the world in 2009.
